On Friday 10th December the winning young poets were presented with their book prizes.<\/p>\n<p>There were twelve prize winners and a further eight received commendations. They were all between the ages of 7 and eleven. One of the poems is featured below.<\/p>\n<p>Home<\/p>\n<p>Hearing my dad on the computer.<br \/>\nHearing the quiet buzz of the heater.<br \/>\nHearing the cars rushing past.<br \/>\nI know I am home.<\/p>\n<p>Smelling paint as I walk past the wall.<br \/>\nSmelling the food being cooked.<br \/>\nI know I am home.<\/p>\n<p>Touching the peach wall when I walk in.<br \/>\nTouching my toys and start playing with them.<br \/>\nI know I am home.<\/p>\n<p>Setting the food on the table ready to eat.<br \/>\nSeeing the furry stairs in the corridor.<br \/>\nI know I am home.<\/p>\n<p><em>By Michael Hills, aged 8, from Yateley Manor, Hampshire<\/em><\/p>\n<p>All winning entries are on <a title=\"children's Poetry Bookshelf\" href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenspoetrybookshelf.co.uk\/templates\/adult\/comp_2010.asp\">Children's Poetry bookshelf<\/a> . The judges of the Old Possum\u2019s Children\u2019s Poetry Competition, led by Chair <a title=\"Roger McGough home page link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rogermcgough.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Roger McGough<\/a>, selected twelve children as winners of the Competition, with a further eight receiving high commendations. The judges awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes to children in two age groups (7-8 and 9-11).<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.dolphinbooksellers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/winners.png?resize=240%2C165\" alt=\"winners\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" width=\"240\" height=\"165\" align=\"left\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This international Poetry Competition, now in its fifth year, is run by the Children\u2019s Poetry Bookshelf, a poetry book club for young people run by the Poetry Book Society. To link with National Poetry Day on Thursday 7 October, children aged 7-11 were invited to submit poems on the theme of \u2018Home\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership with the British Council boosted entries to the <a title=\"International Learners\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britishcouncil.org\/parents-poetry-competition-winners.htm\">\u2018International Learners\u2019 <\/a> category for children based outside the UK who are learning English as a foreign or second language. In total, well over 3,000 entries were received from schools and individual children worldwide, nearly a quarter of which were from 31 countries other than the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Roger McGough said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2019Home' proved to be a fruitful subject for this year's crop of young poets and the judges relished those poems in which the child's imagination was let loose.  More than attention to domestic detail, the sounds and smells, the furnishings, the judges relished those poems in which the child's imagination was let loose.
